- Sorry if this post is a bit long, but bear with me!
-
- It makes ya wanna cry, doesn't it ? Escom UK finally get off their butts
- and start putting commission on A1200s (sans hard-drive ones, don't
- forget), but when someone is actually interested in buying one, then
- what ? It's not enough that they never wanted them (and in my opinion,
- the commission is just their way of getting rid of them), but to strip
- them down and make them the point of greasy salesperson's ridicule is
- quite another. Saturday was a historic day for Escom UK. It was the
- first time that any Escom store had actually LOADED something on their
- A1200s that wasn't in the Magic pack! No purple screen! Actually, it was
- my (admittedly rather lame) demo that I had made just for them (and how
- grateful they were -not). It won't win any prizes for originality,
- content, and it doesn't even show the Amiga off in any way, but it's
- there. One quick point though: I'm not sure whether it's Kickstart 3.1,
- or the dodgy non-DiskReady disc drives, or a subtle combination of the
- two, but rebooting the machine takes an absolute age! It's particularly
- shocking in that my A500+ (still 68000-based) can bring up a pre-boot
- screen in a fraction of the time. I just hope that the A4000s don't turn
- out that way! The rebadged Microvitek monitors are OK, but they're not
- brilliant. The picture is clear, but I'm not sure whether it's our
- monitor or not (we've already had one faulty one), but the screen seemed
- to dip slightly on the right hand side. Another thing is that I expected
- it to handle interlaced screen modes a bit better. It seems just as
- flickery as my Sony TV. The vertical positioning knob didn't seem to
- move the image quite high enough at times (notably on Worms), which
- meant that some of the picture was obscured.
-
- What's the point of my whinging this time ? Well, it's certainly true
- that there aren't many people that have gazed in awe at the Amiga Magic
- box and looked as if they were going to buy it. The first day that we
- had a machine ready to go, a friend of mine decided to bring Worms in
- (and what a fantastic game it is, although typically, Team 17 saw fit to
- focus their attention on the PeeCee version). As he was playing it, the
- game caused a great deal of attention. People giggled at the "bye bye",
- and the "baaaa", and one of my collegues (who is renowned for the
- absence of anything approaching a smile) even began to smile. A
- gentleman with his young son noticed the machine and started to ask a
- few questions about it. I gladly answered them, and augmented my case by
- producing a handy copy of Amiga Shopper magazine (and they said we never
- used them). The man seemed very impressed by it all. He then asked me a
- question which I dreaded more than anything else "what sort of software
- do you have for it ?". "errrr". Problem. OK, Escom are quite willing to
- flog someone an Amiga, and wave them goodbye, but what happens when they
- want some support ? Software ? Hardware ? Technical issues ? Repairs ? I
- have to say that my answer to his question was that Silica provide
- excellent support for Amiga hardware and software and to give them a try
- when he looks for software. I wasn't sure what else to say.
-
- According to an interview with Gilles Bourdin in the latest issue of
- Amiga Shopper, Amiga Technologies chose Escom stores as a last resort (I
- wonder why) due to some of the problems with Silica. Unfortunately, they
- also knew that Escom UK sales staff know zero about Amigas. Escom UK
- obviously felt no obligation towards their sister company, and if their
- behaviour is anything to go by, it's an act of defiance against the
- Commodore buy-out. According to the interview, only 5,000 Amigas were
- sold in the UK. You can count on one hand the numbers within that who
- bought them from Escom stores. I'm hopping mad. These people are
- literally destroying the company, and any chance of returning that the
- Amiga has. From what I have heard, there are people who are STILL trying
- to leave the Amiga scene because of this incompetance. This is quite
- disturbing as I had assumed that this would have slowed down after the
- buyout. Let's face it, AT have had a tremendous amount of rotten luck
- (they've made some pretty awful mistakes as well, but nobody's
- perfect, I guess), and yet they still keep fighting. I hope that they
- don't give up.
-
- Anyway, the main point of this message is that I need your help.
- Commission on Amigas has meant that more stores are beginning to realise
- that they can get quite a bit of money by selling Amigas. In fact, from
- what I have seen, Amigas have a higher "SPIV" (Sales something Incentive
- something) than anything else, so they're pretty desperate to shift
- them. Basically, most of them just have a purple screen. I have gone
- some way to rectifying this, but as yet only my store has got a demo in
- it. If someone can produce a nice demo that'll run on a 2 meg, non-hard
- drive machine, send it to me NOW! Once I get one which everyone agrees
- on, I'll arrange to get copies made (provided it isn't "a waste of
- company resources"), or find some people to give them to the people in
- their local store. We've sat down and moaned about Escom's lack of
- advertising of the Amiga, so let's do some of our own.
-
- Escom UK are either phenomenally stupid, or for some reason are anxious
- that Amigas could rob them of extortinately-high profits. Why else would
- they put an extremely stripped-down A1200 without a hard drive against
- PeeCees with 8 megs of RAM ? In my opinion, the Amiga wins hands down,
- but what do potential customers think ? If you believe that Escom should
- sell the "Surfer" pack, let them know. Shouldn't their staff be trained
- ? Why is there no software or hardware in their stores ? To get answers,
- write to them (especially if there are some stores that STILL refuse to
- display their Amigas). I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I've
- contacted everyone in Head Office I can think of. For goodness sake,
- I've even written to Manfred Schmitt. No joy. People like that won't
- listen to constructive criticism from the inside, it has to cost them
- customers first. YOU are the customers. Write to Escom UK Ltd, 3
- Riverside Way, Riverside Business Park, Irvine, KA11 5DJ, Scotland.
- Every letter counts!
-
- Send any demos you have (DMS, Lha, LZX, or whatever) along to me at:
- odin@dcs.qmw.ac.uk. Thanks for your support.
